Writing Band Score

by admin

The Writing Band Score is your score for the Writing section of the IELTS exam. It measures how effectively you communicate ideas in written English using clear organization, appropriate vocabulary, and accurate grammar.

Your result is reported on the IELTS 0 to 9 band scale, including half bands such as 6.5 and 7.5.

What It Tests

The Writing test checks your ability to:

  • Respond fully to the task
  • Organize ideas logically
  • Use clear paragraph structure
  • Present relevant examples
  • Use a wide range of vocabulary
  • Use accurate grammar
  • Maintain an appropriate tone

Test Format

The Writing test contains 2 tasks.

IELTS Academic

How It Is Calculated

Your Writing Band Score is based on examiner assessment using official criteria.

Task 1 Criteria

  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Task 2 Criteria

  • Task Response

Task 2 has greater influence on the final Writing score.

Why It Matters

Writing is often one of the most difficult sections for candidates. Many institutions require:

Repetition of Vocabulary

Grammar Errors

Frequent mistakes reduce clarity.

Memorized Essays

Prepared answers often sound unnatural and may not fit the question.

Underlength Responses

Writing below the required word count can hurt performance.

Strong candidates can:

  • Understand the task quickly
  • Plan ideas before writing
  • Develop arguments clearly
  • Use varied sentence structures
  • Use precise vocabulary naturally
  • Link ideas smoothly
