Reading Band Score

by admin

The Reading Band Score is your score for the Reading section of the IELTS exam. It measures how well you understand written English, locate information quickly, and interpret ideas accurately.

Your score is reported on the IELTS 0 to 9 band scale, including half bands such as 6.5 and 7.5.

What It Tests

The Reading test checks your ability to:

  • Understand main ideas
  • Identify specific details
  • Recognize writer opinions
  • Follow arguments logically
  • Understand vocabulary in context
  • Match information accurately
  • Read quickly under time pressure

Test Format

The Reading test contains:

  • 40 questions
  • 60 minutes total
  • 3 sections or passages

Academic Reading

  • 3 long academic passages

General Training Reading

  • Everyday workplace and social texts + longer passages

How It Is Calculated

Your raw score depends on how many answers you get correct out of 40 questions.

That raw score is converted into a Band Score.

Example Conversion

  • 23 correct answers ≈ Band 6.0
  • 30 correct answers ≈ Band 7.0
  • 35 correct answers ≈ Band 8.0

(Conversion may differ slightly between Academic and General Training.)

Why It Matters

Many universities, visa programs, and employers require minimum Reading scores such as:

  • Overall 6.5 with Reading 6.0+
  • Overall 7.0 with Reading 6.5+
  • Competitive programs requiring higher Reading bands
