The Speaking Band Score is your score for the Speaking section of the IELTS exam. It measures how effectively you communicate in spoken English through fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.
Your result is reported on the IELTS 0 to 9 band scale, including half bands such as 6.5 and 7.5.

- Use accurate grammar
- Pronounce words clearly
- Develop answers logically
- Communicate opinions confidently
Test Format
The Speaking test is a face-to-face or video-call interview with an examiner and usually lasts 11 to 14 minutes.
It has 3 parts.
Part 1: Introduction and Interview
Questions about familiar topics such as:
- Hometown
- Work
- Study
- Hobbies
- Daily life
Part 2: Long Turn
You receive a topic card and have:
- 1 minute to prepare
- 1 to 2 minutes to speak

How It Is Calculated
Your Speaking Band Score is based on examiner assessment using four official criteria:
- Fluency and Coherence
- Lexical Resource
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
- Pronunciation
These criteria are combined to produce your final Speaking score.
Why It Matters
Many institutions require minimum Speaking scores such as:
- Overall 6.5 with Speaking 6.0+

- Professional licensing requiring strong spoken English
A low Speaking score can reduce your Overall Band Score.
